The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
