The Evolution of a Phenomenon can be marked by distinct phases.

1. The Grand Vision

A charismatic leader or leaders propose a revolutionary approach offering a cure for alienated and vulnerable people.

And so it goes. Plans are in motion to challenge the establishment overseas. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the out-houses. A lone figure, naked, shivering, the words HIGH RELEASE POINT written on his body as a statement, has come staggering through the lines and is removed with discretion for a temporary assignment elsewhere.

Remember the start, when optimism reigned? The days of Bazball 1.0, of pure instinct.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Team architects offer a fresh beginning, hope for a future, camaraderie, redemption within a community who all believe in the philosophy.

What did it represent initially? A team united enjoying success. Body art. Muscles. Focus. Confident masculinity. Of course, England’s players will claim it’s not a real term, amusingly as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?

However, everyone understands its essence. It’s the batsman executing a stroke so depraved it defies description. It’s the excitement of Ben Stokes in ultimate mode, a demeanor suggesting: focused titan, beard made of wood, hair woven from beaver hide, so authentically Modern Savage you wouldn’t be surprised to look down and find him positioned in the field stripped to the waist and cradling a wild salmon.

It’s the batsman still being allowed to talk in press conferences, resembling a cheerful animal smartly dressed, uttering phrases such as we’re breaking down traditions. Certainly, the atmosphere, initially, was only good energy.

3. A New Life

Growth phase. Cohesion maintained via memorization of the cult’s slogans. These principles may seem irrational to prove commitment.

Is it just me? The reaction, the anger, the feeling of letdown post-defeat appears excessive, unwarranted. The performance was poor in Perth, as history shows. Now there is the attacks, the frustration, the view of the sport as a failure. Problems arise due to setbacks. But the cult cannot admit errors. It turns to hostility externally.

The fact remains, half a week out the upcoming game, we are at an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this thing. Victory is possible in the next Test with bold tactics. Probably, failure may follow. In case of defeat it appears we really might be entering the decline.

Before that happens, several aspects to consider on the topic. Previously, back in those heady early days, of optimism and energy, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. People were very angry, which was helpful since it’s clear the best way of proving something definitely isn’t a cult is should followers send hundreds of furiously one-eyed messages rejecting criticism of the beliefs.

The developments recently are equally notable. Opposition to the style has turned into a movement. We have a uniformly angry internet, disappointed commentators, pictures of upset travelling fans disappointed by the short match, similar to investors demanding recourse.

Conversely, there is the broader context of the opponent’s mixed ingrained annoyance with the aggressive tourists, out there saying, hey, that thing you love and have fostered and nurtured as part of your identity from the opposition, it’s not serious in the end old boy.

And this is the real point. It’s all cults. Bazball was a cult since the sport itself is insular. In fact, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a garden party, an insular community with two hundred years of tradition and mystery defining it. Historically, this was a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the British pastime of England, the original sports washers. And notably, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a royal family remains.

The players have been enclosed within this world from a young age. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are mirroring their own experience, creating another a bubble, an exclusive group, but doing it this time with a new team and a mentor encouraging individuality if you fit the mold.

Stay present. Run towards the danger. However much you change, things stay similar.
